BEWARE!

Even if you have experience of installing printers on Windows 95 please follow these instructions to the letter. Failing to do so may result in installation failure that requires the driver software be removed and adjustments made to several system settings.

A shortcut here is not worth the trouble.

NEW COMPUTER USERS

If you purchased your computer and printer at the same time it would be a good idea to become used to your computer before connecting to the printer. It will make installation of your printer easier if you are familiar with the operation of Windows 95 first.

SETTING UP THE PRINTER BEFORE CONNECTING TO THE COMPUTER

Before connecting the printer to the computer follow steps 1 to 3 of "Setting Up the Printer" in the Operators Manual (Part 1, Page 2-1).

When you reach step 4 Stop. This instruction sheet should now be followed. Do Not test the connection as instructed on page 2-7.

We can now carry out a test to be certain that steps 1 to 3 have been carried out correctly. To do this make sure that the printer READY light is green. If it is not make sure the power cable is plugged in and the wall socket is switched on. The printer mechanism will run for a short time and the READY light will turn on.

With the light on press and hold down the front panel button until all the lights just start to flash, then release immediately. After a few seconds the printer will print a configuration sheet. This sheet can be discarded.

CONNECTING THE PRINTER TO THE COMPUTER

The T9108 and T9208 printers support the Microsoft Windows 95 Plug-n-Play method of installing new hardware. For this to work correctly the sequence of events of connecting and switching on the computer and printer is vital. Before you start read through these steps to familiarise yourself.

  1. Shut down Windows 95 and turn off the computer.
  2. Turn off the printer at the wall socket.
  3. Connect the printer to the computer with an IEEE P-1284 compatible parallel interface cable. Your dealer will be able to supply a cable that meets this specification.
  4. Switch on the printer and wait until the READY light comes on.
  5. Switch on the computer.
  6. Windows 95 will now start. Depending on the Windows 95 version installed on your PC, one of the following Windows will be displayed: "New Hardware Found" or "Update Device Driver Wizard". The first few steps differ and are detailed below.

"New Hardware Found Window"

  1. When Windows 95 has completed its normal start-up a grey "NEW HARDWARE FOUND" message window will be displayed that identifies the "MANNESMANN Tally T9X08" and tells you that Windows 95 has found new hardware and is installing the software for it.
If your computer does not find new hardware refer to Trouble Shooting Note 1.
  2. After a few seconds this message will be replaced by a new window that asks you to "Select which driver you want to install for your new hardware". The default option is set for "Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer". Make sure this option is selected and click on "OK".
  3. The "Install From Disk" window will be displayed, and prompts you for a disk. The default path for the disk is A:\. This is normal for most computers that have a single 3.5" floppy drive and should not be changed. DO NOT TYPE A:\SETUP. Put the Mannesmann Tally WPS Driver Disk 1 in the floppy drive and click on "OK".
  4. Now go to All Windows Releases

"Update Device Driver Wizard"

  1. When Windows 95 has completed its normal start-up the "Update Device Driver Wizard" message window will be displayed.
  2. Insert the T9108/T9208 WPS Driver Disk 1 into your floppy drive.
  3. Click Next.
  4. The "Update Device Driver Wizard" Window will display a message telling you that "You MUST use the setup program". Ignore this message and click on Finish.
  5. The "Insert Disk" message Window is displayed. The WPS Disk 1 should already be in the floppy drive. If it is not insert it now. Click OK.
  6. The "Copying Files" Window is now displayed enter a:\ into the "Copy files from" frame. Click OK.

All Windows Releases

  1. Some files will be copied from the disk and after a pause the "MANNESMANN Tally T9108/T9208 Set-up" window will be displayed advising you that "Loading, this takes 1-5 minutes". If the "MANNESMANN Tally T9108/T9208 Set-up" window does not appear   refer to Trouble Shooting Note 3.
  2. You will next be prompted to check that the printer is connected, switched on and the   green READY light is on. These actions should have already been done. See steps 1 to 4 of this section. Click on "Continue".
  3. Next you will be asked to register the software in your or your company’s name. Click on "OK" to continue.
  4. You are now asked to confirm your details. Click on "OK" if you are sure the details are correct.
  5. The "Installation Method" window will now be displayed and you are prompted for "Express" or "Custom" installation. Click on "Express".
  6. Next the computer will search for your printer. If the computer detects your printer it will display a window with the details of the printer. It will give you the name of the printer, the port to which it is connected and the amount of memory.

For example: "LPT1:[WPS PRINTER] MANNESMANN Tally T9108 with 1.0Mb[1024k]". If your printer is not detected see Trouble Shooting Note 2. If the details are correct click on "Continue".

  7. The De-installation program and the files on Tally WPS Disk 1 will now be copied to your hard disk. After Disk 1 has loaded you will be prompted to insert Tally WPS Disk 2. Click on OK.
  8. When the software has completed loading the "Install Confirmation" window will be displayed. This tells you what features have been installed. Click on OK.
  9. After a pause you will now be prompted to restart your computer. Remove WPS Disk 2 from the floppy drive and click on "Restart Windows".
  10. When the computer is restarting the screen goes black with a flashing cursor in the top   left-hand corner. The Windows 95 start-up screen is then displayed. Some computers may not restart properly. If Windows has not restarted after 60 seconds switch the computer off and on again.

After Restarting

  1. After a few seconds the "RESUME SETUP" window will be displayed. Then the Windows Printing System will advise you that "This is the first time Windows has run since installation of the Windows Printing System Software. Would you like to print a test page to verify that the installation was successful". This is not necessary, as you have already printed a Windows 95 Test Page. Click on YES.
  2. If the WPS test page prints then click on OK. If it does not print click on "Print Again".
  3. You will now get the message window saying that "Installation Succeeded". Click on OK.
  4. Your system is now ready for printing.

If for any reason your system did not install properly read the Installation Trouble Shooting notes below.

Trouble Shooting

  1. "NEW HARDWARE" is not found by Windows.
There are two main reasons why this has occurred:
    • The printer cable is faulty or is not the correct type to support a bi-directional interface. Check that you have IEEE P-1284 compatible parallel interface cable. You dealer should be able to help you.
    • A previous installation has been tried and was stopped or failed. This will disable Plug-n-Play detecting your printer again. You will need to do the following and then start your installation again:
Click on "Start". Then Click on "RUN" and enter "REGEDIT" in the window and click OK.

      Double click on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE".

      Double click "ENUM"

      Double click "LPTENUM"

Click on "MANNESMANN Tally" or "MANNESMANN Tally T9X08" depending on the installation version supplied.

      Click on "Edit"

      Click on "Delete"

Now switch off the computer and printer and start the installation again from the "CONNECTING THE PRINTER TO THE COMPUTER" section.

  2. "The Installation program failed to find your printer while searching"
Check that the printer is properly connected to the computer, is switched on and is ready. Then proceed as in 1 above.
  3. "MT WPS Setup" window does not appear.
This may occur if a previous installation failed. If you are experienced with Windows 95, (Call your dealer if not), make a backup copy of your WIN.INI file, then using DOS EDIT or Windows Notepad search for the following line and delete it.
            WPSTESTPAGE=1
Now click on the MT De-installer ICON. Restart your printer and your computer and try to install again from the "CONNECTING THE PRINTER TO THE COMPUTER" section.
